Is rapid rescoring the same as credit repair? What a rescore can and cannot do
Side by side

| Can it remove accurate negative information? | No | No. Accurate information stays for the period the law allows |
| How long it takes | Typically the next business day; rush typically the same business day | Bureau investigations run on the dispute timetable, generally 30 days |
| The law that governs it | The Fair Credit Reporting Act, which governs the bureaus and the agencies that prepare reports | The Credit Repair Organizations Act, which bans charging before the work is fully done |
What a rescore can do
A rescore updates the data, and the score is recalculated from it under whichever model your lender uses. For example, it can:
- report a card balance you paid down today, instead of next month;
- correct a status, such as a paid loan still showing a balance;
- remove an account that is not yours, once the creditor confirms it;
- show a credit limit that was just raised.
Our guide to what a rescore is lists the rest, with an example.
What a rescore cannot do
- Remove accurate information. A real late payment, collection or bankruptcy stays for the period the law allows.
- Add an account the creditor does not report.
- Promise a number. A loan officer can be told in advance what a change is expected to do. The result is the recalculated score.
- Replace your own dispute. For an error you find months ahead, a dispute with the bureau is free and needs no lender.
How to tell which one you are being offered
If someone asks you to pay to improve your credit report or score, that is credit repair, and the Credit Repair Organizations Act applies. It bars charging you before the services are fully performed, and it requires a written contract you can cancel within three business days. A Score Express rescore never asks you for money, and it is requested by a lender you are already working with.
Questions people ask
Can I request a rapid rescore myself?
No. A rescore is ordered by a lender on a credit file it has pulled. If you are not working with a loan officer yet, the directory lists loan officers who can request one.
How long does a rapid rescore take?
Score Express: typically the next business day; rush typically the same business day.
Does a rapid rescore hurt my credit?
It changes the data your score is built from, not your history. A score can fall if the update calls for it, for example when underwriting needs an account change. Ask your loan officer what they expect before it is requested.
How much does a rapid rescore cost, and who pays?
You never pay for a Score Express rescore. Your loan officer requests it.
Will a credit repair company help me get a mortgage?
What a credit repair company can lawfully do, you can do yourself for free: dispute errors with the bureau. For accurate updates, a loan officer can request a rescore.
