Understand the consequences

Could a credit-help program work against my home purchase?

Examine the reporting and mortgage effects of repair, counseling and debt programs.

Look past the label to the proposed actions.

Ask for a written explanation of what will happen to each account, payment and balance. Evaluate the consequences for your credit file and mortgage timing even when a program is presented as helpful or nonprofit.

Counseling and a debt management plan are different steps.

Advice alone is different from enrolling accounts in a repayment plan. A debt management plan may require credit-card closures, which can affect utilization. Consistent payments may help your payment history. The starting file and actual actions determine the impact. Experian: debt management plans ↗

Understand settlement and dispute proposals.

Debt settlement programs commonly involve stopping payments, which can damage credit and expose you to collections. Credit repair offers cannot legitimately promise to erase accurate, current negative information. You can dispute errors yourself for free. CFPB: program differences and risks ↗

Ask about the end of the process, too.

What will each creditor report during and after the program? Will accounts close or payments become late? What would the mortgage lender need to see afterward? Ask about costs, alternatives and the impact on your intended purchase date before committing.

What rules apply to paid credit repair?

Companies covered by the Credit Repair Organizations Act must follow its consumer protections, including its ban on demanding advance payment. Keep this in mind

Evaluate the proposed actions through reporting, scoring, loan requirements and recovery, not only the immediate payment relief.

A question to take with you

What will my credit file look like during and after this program, and how could that affect the mortgage I want?
